GDA imposes ban on use of polythene, plastic bottles in Gulmarg

Asks hoteliers refrain from using plastic water bottles in hotels, replace same with glass bottles measures to remain in place for a month to ensure complete switchover to glass bottles

Srinagar, Aug 05 : In a major step to prevent use of plastic and polythene in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) has announced a complete ban on polythene and plastic bottles in hotels across the resort for a period of one month.

According to a circular issued by the GDA, a copy of which is with the news agency—Kashmir News Corner (KNC), Gulmarg is an eco-fragile zone and keeping it plastic/polythene free is the collective responsibility of all.

“In keeping with the efforts of GDA/Local Municipality and stakeholders to keep Gulmarg clean and Polythene/Plastic free it has become inevitable to take necessary steps to enforce a complete ban on polythene/plastic within Gulmarg.

“Hoteliers of Gulmarg have been forthcoming in the green initiatives taken by the GDA, whether anti-polythene drives or conduct of eco-tourism conclaves,” the circular issued by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tourism Development Authority, Gulmarg, reads, adding that “In furtherance of our collective responsibility to keep Gulmarg Polythene/Plastic free, It is enjoined upon hoteliers of Gulmarg to kindly refrain from using plastic water bottles within their hotels henceforth and replace the same with glass bottles. The necessary measures required in this behalf shall be put in place within a period of one month to ensure complete switchover to glass bottles.”

The circular further stated that the steps shall only align with the collaborative efforts and responsibility to preserve the pristine beauty of Gulmarg—(KNC)
