SRINAGAR: Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh, on Friday said that militants keep on changing their locations and were active in north Kashmir as well.
“Sometimes people assume that militancy is limited to south Kashmir, which is not true,” Singh told reporters on the sidelines of the wreath-laying ceremony for a CRPF personnel at Humhama here.
The CRPF man identified as constable Mritunjoy Chutia of 115 battalion was killed in a grenade attack in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Wednesday. “We feel sad by this killing,” the DGP said.
He said that militants are also active in northern Kashmir. “They keep on changing locations. In Srinagar they try to carry out militancy, but we are not allowing,” he said.
“Yesterday’s encounter in Baramulla is third one in the area in a month or two. It shows militants are active in north Kashmir or are trying to remain active.”
He was referring to Keeri Baramulla gunfight in which two militants including a local were killed.
Singh praised the role of CRPF and other security forces in holding elections in J&K. “They played a vital role in holding the elections,” he said.
IGP CRPF Charon Sinha said that such incidents won’t deter their resolve. “We will together work for bringing peace in Kashmir,” she said and paid rich tributes to the slain paramilitary trooper.
IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, besides other senior officers of security forces were present during the ceremony.
