Srinagar, June 11: Gusty winds coupled with rains on Friday afternoon caused massive damage to orchards,trees and residential houses in parts of Kashmir Valley.

Reports reaching the news agency—Kashmir Scroll (KS) said that dozens of residential houses, electric transmission lines got damaged while trees were uprooted due to strong winds in several areas of south Kashmir as well as in north Kashmir.

They said that rooftops of about a dozen residential houses were damaged due strong winds in many parts of south Kashmir including Shopain, Kulgam,Pulwama and Anantnag.

Official sources told news agency—Kashmir Scroll that power supply also got affected in these areas as strong winds damaged transmission lines and uprooted electric poles at several places. He, however, said that no loss of life has been reported so far from these areas.

The official said that traffic movement on Mughal road connecting Poonch and Shopain districts, also halted after many trees fell on the road due to strong winds.

District Traffic Incharge Mughal Road Mohammad Qasim confirmed to Kashmir Scroll that Mughal road has been closed for traffic,he added that “Efforts are being made by authorities to restore the traffic movement on the road.

Sources informed the Kashmir Scroll about the lightning strike on a tree in Khajapora village of Shopian district on Friday evening. However No loss of life and property reported from the spot.

Meanwhile, reports said that strong winds also wreaked havoc in other parts of Kashmir valley including Srinagar, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara districts.

Sources said that several residential houses, orchards and standing crop suffered extensive damage due to gusty winds followed by rains, hailstorm in parts of Baramulla, Sopore, Bandipora and several other areas.

Farmers and residents from affected areas have appealed Jammu and Kashmir administration to depute official teams to their areas to assess the losses caused by hail and windstorms for compensation.
