Reorganisation Amendment Bill 2025: BJP Won’t Stay in Power Forever, Same Laws May Backfire Them Tomorrow: CM Omar Abdullah

Says, Bill Seems to Target Opposition Only; “So far, only opposition leaders have been targeted; If this Bill is truly about ending corruption, then what about corruption since 2014?”

Srinagar, Aug 22: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that the promises of the current Parliament session have not been fulfilled and questioned the intent behind the Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, warning that its misuse could one day affect those in power as well.

Speaking to media persons, CM Omar as per news agency JKNS said, “The expectations we had from this Parliament session have not been met. We will start our process from here. We felt the promises made to us would be implemented, but now we will begin our own struggle. Even if we have to make some effort and struggle for it, we will start.”

On the Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, he said, “So far, only opposition leaders have been targeted in the cases filed. If this step—this Bill—is truly about ending corruption, then what impact has the government’s work since 2014 had until now?”

CM Omar further remarked, “No law is bad in itself, but the way it is used can be wrong. My fear is that this law too will be misused. I want to remind my friends in the BJP of only one thing: they will not remain in government forever. The same laws they are using today against others will tomorrow be used against their own people. Do not do this. Playing with the law will not benefit this country. Now the Bill is with the Parliamentary Committee, and they will decide what to do with it.”

On the termination of two government employees from services, the Chief Minister said, “This is something you will have to ask Raj Bhawan. We have no role in it.”

When asked about the day’s cabinet meeting and the relief measures being discussed for the cloudburst-hit areas of Kishtwar and Kathua, Omar said, “For now, we are providing all the relief that is required. If, after proper assessment, there is a need for more assistance, arrangements will be made accordingly.”

Earlier, there was strong speculation about statehood being restored to Jammu and Kashmir, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself repeatedly expressing hope that it would happen during the current Monsoon session of Parliament.

On 20th August, Union Home Minister Amit Shah Introduces the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha along with The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025 and The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The J&K Reorganisation Amendment Bill, 2025 proposes that “A Minister, who for any period of thirty consecutive days during holding the office as such, is arrested and detained in custody, on allegation of committing an offence under any law for the time being in force, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or more, shall be removed from his office, by the Lieutenant Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister to be tendered by the thirty-first day, after being taken in such custody.” (JKNS)
