Stringent security measures have been put in place. The police is alert, Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar told reporters here.

The police and other forces will ensure that the people celebrate I-Day without any fear, Kumar said.

Referring to busting of hideout in Awantipora area, the IGP said police was alert and had information about the presence of militants. “We busted the hideout, recovered arms and ammunition but militant who was using it managed to escape from the spot,” he said.

Sources told KNT that huge number of security men have been stationed near important function areas. The venues have also been sealed while SK Stadium in Sonwar Srinagar, where the 15 August celebration will take place has already been handed over to security personnel.

“It has been turned into a virtual fortress,” said an official adding that the security apparatus is not taking any chances.

The usual security drill is being followed, but some extra measures have been put in place to ensure the day passes peacefully, he said.

A number of check-points have been set up at various junctions and main entry-points to Srinagar, further vehicles are being checked routinely, the official said.

Frisking has also been intensified. On Thursday, security personnel were seen frisking commuters and pedestrians in different parts of Srinagar.

Meanwhile, a full-dress rehearsal for the August 15 celebration was held today at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium Sonwar. Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Pandurangan Pole, unfurled the tricolour, inspected the parade and took salute at the march past. (KNT)
