JAMMU, May 1: Chairman, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Minority Deptt and President J&K Motor Transport Companies Association (JKMTCA), Gajan Singh Khajuria, today asked the central and Jammu and Kashmir governments to provide financial assistance to the transport sectors.
“The transporters who are forced to give up their source of income and sit idle at home amid the coronavirus lockdown have asked the governments for financial assistance,” he said.
Movement of all vehicles, except for those providing essential services and commodities, is prohibited during the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“There is no work for transporters for the past month. It has become very difficult to manage their day to day expenses. Their children are also suffering. They request the J&K and central governments to help them,” Gajan Singh said.
“Ever since the lockdown was imposed, the vehicle of the transporters have been parked due to which they and drivers and cleaners are facing a lot of problems. Their family has run out of money and they are unable to buy even things of basic needs. The government should help drivers and cleaners in these tough times,” he said adding that many transporters are even unable to pay back the installments of the loans they have taken.
