Ganderbal, 10th June, CNS: Hundreds of stray horses have created nuisance, in various parts of Ganderbal, while authorities seem to be in deep slumber to address the issue.
Locals told CNS over the phone that stray horses are obstructing the traffic in Ganderbal and held them responsible for causing road accidents as well.
An aggrieved farmer said, “Horses are being abandoned by their owners in winters and they can be seen roaming around everywhere. At this peak season of farming these horses damage our crops and nobody from authorities is taking any steps to solve the issue.”
On other hand Animal rights activists have also expressed their concern over abandoning of horses.
“Owners of such horses abandon them during non-productive seasons, because they don’t want to spend money on their fodder, such owners should be held responsible for this so they should be booked for the same,” said an animal rights activist.
When contacted, Animal Husbandry officer Ganderbal, he said, “We are taking medical care of all stray animals including these horses.”
Replying to a question, as to what the department will do for saving farmers from the damage, he said, “will take up the issue with the Municipal Committee and other concerned departments as well”.
EO Municipal Committee said, “We are going to establish two stables in Beehama very soon and we have already appealed owners of such animals especially horses to take them into custody failing which will become govt property.”
Locals especially farmers of Ganderbal appealed District Magistrate Ganderbal to look into the matter and take appropriate actions. (CNS)
