Srinagar, Mar 11: Relatives of a patient on Thursday afternoon staged a protest demonstration alleging a doctor at Sub-District Hospital Kangan of getting the surgery performed at a Private Hospital despite suggesting to get in done at the same hospital two months before.

Taliking to media persons, the patient identifying himself as Mudasir Ahmad son of Mohammed Ashraf Rather, a resident of Barwulla Kangan, told that he was suggested to undergo an Ortho-Surgery, as was suggested by the doctor, however the Anaesthesia Specialist Dr. Shaista, after deferring it for nearly two months finally asked me to get the surgery performed at Khyber Hospital, Srinagar.

“The Surgeon on duty has finalised the proposed surgery, saying that he can perform surgery provided the other doctor administers Anaesthesia”, the patient said.

The patient showing the medicines, mostly Anaesthesia injections, which according to him, he was asked to procure from market said that the doctors are now telling him that they can’t perform the surgery and instead asking me to go to a private hospital.

Showing a medical document, the patient said that he was even made to give his sign (consent) for surgery, however made to go without surgery actually done.

When asked about having reported the issue to Medical Officer, the patient responded in affirmative, saying further that the said medical officer asked him not to worry even after two months elapse.

“I am a lone bread-winner for my family and can’t get the surgery done through private (hospital)”, the patient said.

Mother of the patient said that they have no resources as he (patient) is the only earning hand in the family. “I begged to the Anaesthesia doctor, but yesterday she threw away the medicines even as prescribing them herself.”

“We can’t get it (surgery) performed through private”, she said adding that “I sold off my cow to buy him medicines.”

Meanwhile when contacted Chief Medical Officer Ganderbal Dr. Mehraj Ahmad outrightly exonerated the alleged doctor maintaining that he has conducted an ‘oral’ enquiry into the issue.

“There are different procedures at SDH, DH and Tertiary levels and the patient concerned had to undergo Ultrasono Guided Block, the machine of which is not available at the hospital”, the officer told GNS.

When asked about the claim of the patient that the alleged doctor asked him to get the surgery done at Khyber Hospital, Srinagar, the CMO played down the issue, saying that “These things are petty and the doctor is young”, adding that “They don’t have that much access to Khyber (Hospital).”

Exonerating the doctor of allegations, the top district level medical officer said that, “She would have told them that it (surgery) is not done here and instead at a tertiary hospital.”

When further pressed that if it was not possible for the hospital to perform the surgery, how and why the doctors’ suggested him, as claimed by the patient, to get it done at the same hospital, to which the officer responded that, “The Doctor (suggesting the surgery) has came from a Medical College and has been under an impression that same equipments would be available the hospital concerned, which is not the case.”

Asked as wheather any enquiry has been conducted into the whole issue, the officer said that he has done it orally. “I have done it orally”, he said and disconnected the call. (GNS)
