Anantnag,Mar, 23: In order to boost the backyard and organic backyard farming, agriculture department Anantnag today kickstarted the sale drive of seedlings of various vegetable varieties at kitchen Garden Bijbehara. The drive was jointly started by Sub Divisional Magistrate Bijbehara, Saleem Jahangir and Chief Agriculture Officer Anantnag, Dr Syed Waseem Ahmad Shah in presence of District Agriculture Officer Extension, Apiculture Development officer, In charge Kitchen Garden Assistant and other Officials.
“It is expected that about 2.0 lac seedlings of different vegetable varieties covering an area of 9.3 hectares with a production of 3262 Qtls with estimated worth of Rs 97.86 lacs will be sold”, the officials informed.
On the occasion, CAO, Dr Waseem said that the department has been promoting Kitchen Garden activities by providing high quality seeds and seedlings at subsidized rates. “This encourages people to take this activity as a hobby and consume organically grown vegetables which also reduces their import thus helping our health and economy,” he added.
The people of the area hailed the efforts of the department for the initiative and were highly enthusiastic for promotion of this venture in their backyards.
