‘Exchange of greetings, waving at tourists across river amid captivating hooting adds charm to destination’

Keran, Aug 01: In a bid to revive Kashmir’s leading tourist hotspots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Keran, a picturesque border region in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, blessed with the serenity of the Kishenganga (Neelum) river forming the Line of Control between Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Jammu and Kashmir, is poised to emerge as a sought-after destination.

The border tourist destination of Keran, as observed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) Correspondent, entices a substantial number of tourists due to the captivating hooting and waving exchanges between visitors from both countries, taking place on the banks of the river which is serving as the LoC between PoK and J&K.Tourists from both countries also can be seen passionately raising slogans in support of their respective nations on either side.

As the lyrics of Javed Akhtar, one of Bollywood’s iconic lyricists, filled the valley, tourists found themselves enchanted by the melodious tunes. The verses of “Panchhi nadiyan pawan ke jhoken, Koi sarhad naa inhe roke. Sarhaden insaano keliye hain, Socho, tumne aur maine, Kya paaya insaan hoke.” resonated through the air, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.

Amid the huge rush of visitors from across the Union Territory and other parts of the country, another thing the locals have learned from other tourists destinations including Pahalgam and Gulmarg is to be ready with their decorated horses for the welcome of tourists to ride them towards the beautiful sub areas of this border tourist destination.

As the influx of visitors from across the Union Territory and different parts of the country continues, the locals have taken inspiration from top tourist destinations like Pahalgam and Gulmarg. They have readied their adorned horses to warmly greet the arriving tourists and offer them delightful rides to explore the scenic sub-areas of this captivating border destination which is home to many beauties like streams, springs, river, mountains, dense forests and walnut trees.

“Enveloped in warmth and kindness, the people of this enchanting region graciously tend to tourists from their arrival until their departure,” remarked Sameer Ahmad, an awe-struck visitor hailing from Srinagar.

He also said that the local community is reaping the benefits by earning their livelihood.

“In this up-and-coming place, the locals are impressively disciplined, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors. The young tourists were amazed by how well they managed the parking rush and shared beautiful stories about the area,” he added.

“We locals take immense pride in dedicating ourselves to the continuous improvement of this blessed place. Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of tourists while also enlightening them about the rich history of our region,” said Suhail Ahmad, a hospitable home stay owner.

He further emphasized the crucial role played by the Indian Army in fostering the growth and development of this popular tourist destination. “Thanks to their efforts, the place has gained widespread recognition in recent years. The army’s initiative to invite numerous influential YouTubers has greatly contributed to promoting this beautiful valley on a global scale,” he added.

Throughout the years, the locals have embraced the art of welcoming tourists with warmth and love. Undoubtedly, the place is an absolute marvel. A group of visitors from Budgam expressed their hope that with increased efforts from the government and the army in developing this gem, it will undoubtedly transform into one of the most enchanting places in Kashmir in the near future.

Hurdles of Waste Disposal

The surge in tourist influx has brought about significant challenges for the area, particularly concerning environmental safety. As per locals tourists have been indiscriminately disposing of their waste along the riverbanks, creating a disheartening sight in the valley.

During a visit to the scene, this reporter witnessed an alarming accumulation of garbage at various spots, causing inconvenience and concern among the locals.

“It’s unfortunate that tourists have chosen several dumping spots themselves. They should either take their waste with them when they leave or inform us about it, so we can create a proper disposal area,” expressed Tanveer Ahmad, another local.

Mohammad Ayoob, who visited the valley with his family, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of network connectivity. He urged the administration to address this issue promptly and make reliable communication available in the area.

Despite bringing the issue of mobile connectivity to the attention of concerned authorities numerous times, an official stated that no significant progress has been made.

However, he also said that efforts are underway to address the other issues including lack of toilet facilities in and around Keran.

Several washrooms are currently being constructed, and they are expected to be open for both tourists and locals in the area in a short span of time.

Furthermore, he also disclosed that a comprehensive plan for the scientific disposal of waste is under consideration.

A Remarkable Transformation Amidst Previous Ordeals

According to the locals, daily life has significantly improved since the place opened for tourism. However, strict surveillance still persists in the area.

“Ever since the ceasefire pact in February 2021, our region has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Before that, life was fraught with difficulties, with shelling being a daily ordeal,” they shared.

“Ever since the ceasefire pact in February 2021, our region has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Before that, life was fraught with difficulties, with shelling being a daily ordeal,” they shared.

“The shelling has resulted in the loss of many lives and the destruction of numerous houses. We fervently pray to never witness such devastation again,” added Suhail. He further mentioned that although some families have migrated to the other side of the river, their abandoned homes in the village remain in ruins—(KNO)
