The helicopter was en route to inaugurate a dam in northern Iran in cooperation with the President of Azerbaijan. Fars News reported the loss of contact with the helicopter, which was soon followed by confirmation of the crash site by military drones. Rescue operations by land and air began simultaneously, but poor weather conditions prevented the exact location of the helicopter from being identified.
This morning, rescuers found the wreckage of the helicopter and moved towards it, but conditions were unfavorable as there were no signs of the passengers being alive.
First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is set to assume Raisi’s responsibilities. New elections are expected to be called within the next 50 days to elect a new president.
