Srinagar, Aug 26: The ongoing rotten meat crisis in the Valley took a disturbing turn on Tuesday when residents of Bohrikadal, a densely populated locality in Srinagar, discovered several bags filled with the remains (heads) of sheep and goats abandoned in their neighborhood. The shocking sight has stirred public anger and deepened concerns about food safety and the illegal meat trade.
Local sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the remains mostly heads of sheep and goats appeared to have been dumped by profiteers or unscrupulous elements under the cover of darkness. By morning, the foul presence of the bags had already attracted attention, drawing dozens of residents to the spot. Eyewitnesses said many people gathered around, some taking videos to share on social media, demanding accountability and action.
“The question everyone is asking is: who did this, and why here?” a local remarked while pointing to the heap of animal remains. “This is not only shocking but a matter of public health. Such things cannot be ignored.”
The discovery comes at a time when the Valley is already gripped by unease over the alleged circulation of rotten meat, with authorities facing mounting pressure to enforce strict regulations and reassure the public about the quality of food reaching local markets. The abandoned remains in Bohrikadal, locals fear, are an indicator of a larger and more organized malpractice.
Health and municipal officials are expected to take stock of the situation, while locals insist that law enforcement agencies must identify and bring to justice those behind the act. “Dumping animal remains in residential areas is not only inhumane but also criminal.
