Talking to reporters here, SSP said that as we know the ongoing Pandemic has taken heavy toll on the lives of people across the globe, Jammu and Kashmir Police had also lost their men in the crisis. “The Covid19 pandemic proved a challenge for J&K Police as the department lost few of its men in the pandemic. We were on toes to ensure anti-pandemic lockdown in which general public extended their full cooperation”, SSP said.

He also said that JKP extended its full support to needy people in pandemic times and provided its best what it could at grassroots level. The officer futher said that on the eve of new year the Jammu and Kashmir Police identified 600 families from all sub-divisions of the district and provided them Covid19 specialised kits.

He thanked people of the district in general for acting upon the anti-Covid19 guidelines and extending their full support for enforcing the directions of administration on ground.

About expansion of drug trade in the district, the SSP said that recently a youth from Srinagar’s Khanyar locality died in a Pahalgam hotel due to ‘overdoze’ of drugs which is a grave concern for the entire society. “Now youth are indulged in this anti-societal trade at a level where they are dying due to over dose of drugs. We are investigating the case deeply”, he said.

He while continuing said that the parents can’t run away from their responsibilities and let their children to die while taking drugs. He added that parents are not caring and monitoring the acivities of their children as they can.

Giving details about NDPS cases, the SSP said that there has been a huge rise in cases in year 2020 as compare to previous years. “In 2014 there were 40 cases registered in the district against which 45 persons were detained. Similarly in 2015, 42 persons were arrested against 39 cases. In 2016, 43 persons arrested against 28 cases. In 2017, 56 persons detained against 45 cases. During 2018, 42 arrested against 31 cases. In 2019, 51 arrested against 36 cases and in 2020 the number gone up with 133 arrestes in 101 cases”, the SSP said.

Chowdhary added that the number of cases in 2020 alone were more than 2017, 2018 and 2019 which means after every three days, a single case has been lodged in the district and according the detentions.

To a query, the SSP said that the district police has already taken strong cognizance of few Dhaba’s in Sangam area who as per credible inputs were involved in expansion of drug trade. “Through the medium of media, I warn them to desist from this trade, otherwise it will invite PSA against the involved persons in future”, he said.

About “operation dreams”, the SSP said that district police had taken up an initiative to provide free coaching to students but it was put on hold due to recently concluded DDC polls. “The initiative is still in place and will be resumed from January 2021”, he added. (KNS)
